Exhibition: Iconic 60s & 70s Lifestyle & Sports Photography

Chris Smith & John Reader

Chris Smith's career in sports photography started at the Observer in 1970. Six years later he joined the The Sunday Times, where he worked for over thirty years. He won The Sports Photographer of the Year four times and the Individual Sports Picture of the Year twice.

Chris covered every major sporting event including rugby and football world cups, horse racing, cricket, athletics, sailing and boxing.

This collection features a selection of Chris most renowned shots of Muhammad Ali. The images reveal the complex personality of one of sport’s most controversial and best loved characters. The works portray Ali's composure and confidence as well as his wit, intelligence and theatrical personality.

John Reader was a London-based photojournalist during the busy 60s and 70s, regularly on assignment at home and abroad for the Sunday Times, Observer and Telegraph magazines as well as for foreign publications – among them Paris Match, Stern, Epoca, Time and, in particular, for LIFE Magazine.

The subjects he covered ranged from the heart-rending – the Aberfan disaster, to the exotic – the Kings of Africa. The images are distinguished by his ability to capture the expressive off-script moment – as evidenced in the pictures exhibited here of Michael Caine filming Billion Dollar Brain in Finland, 1967, a Rolling Stones recording session in1967, and Yoko Ono & John Lennon in1968.

Exhibition: Paula Wilkins & Michael Wallner

Paula Wilkins... how to describe her work? She likes to communicate ideas using a variety of mediums. Her images evolve, gathering characteristics at each stage which alter them through enhancement or degradation, dislocating them from their original state and intended meaning.

We've paraphrased from her own website and hope we've done her methods justice. In any case, we absolutely LOVE her "Tracing the Future" series showcased at the Wet Fish, in which she's given new narratives to iconic renaissance works. They vibrate off the walls!

Michael Wallner digitally manipulates his photographs to produce unusual art installations using a variety of sufaces and mediums. Here we have images printed directly onto brushed aluminium, giving an etched impression, and a neon Thames entitled "River of Light" mounted onto reclaimed wood -- we love it!

Exhibition: Lhouette Art
Post Urban Glamour

Lhouette's unique style of art has made quite an impact among certain circles of the commercial art world, creating an ever growing army of enthusiasts and collectors including some of the UKs bright and beautiful celebrity figures.

His urban style lends itself as much to street art as it does to the world of pop art. Stenciling techniques, visually arresting colourations, symbols, images and text all executed through a host of mixed mediums, instil a sense of urgency and a ‘call to arms’ mentality on those who pore over his work. "If I had to label my style would be called 'POST URBAN GLAMOUR'"

Exhibition by ROSIE EMERSON

The Wet Fish is showcasing five stunning works by Rosie Emerson. Dramatic, intriguing, elegant - it's no wonder Rosie is widely tipped as an artist to watch out for.

Recent review of Rosie's work in VOGUE.

The Hackney-based artist is best known for her elongated depictions of women. Since graduating in Fine Art from Kingston University In 2004, she has dedicated her practice to exploring the subject of the female image. Emerson’s figures draw reference from archetype’s old and new, from Artemis to the modern day super model. Depicted as solitary figures, the women are objects of desire trapped in enigmatic images of both irresistibility and impotence.

Rosie has work in a number of private collections and has exhibited widely in the UK, Europe and the US. Last year Rosie collaborated with jewelry designer Annoushka Ducas producing 9 life size portraits shown in her flagship boutique for London Fashion Week. This year she is creating work with choreographer Daniel Paul Jones and dancers from The English National Ballet.

"Rosie is a brilliant young artist and curator. Her work – across photography, painting and drawing – is elegantly elongated, theatrical and really rather beautiful." Tom Jeffreys, Spoonfed

LISA MARINI - gypsy blues trio

Weds 17 May 2017

We're so excited to have Lisa Marini back, she's a stunning performer with a captivating voice. She silenced the room when she played at the cafe last year.

Lisa blends Blues with Gypsy and Latin to create her own unique, authenticly fresh sound. It's also been described as dark folk with elements of jazz. You decide!

She's sold out shows in The Jazz Cafe and Ronnie Scotts and has quite the reputation on the London scene; Lisa is tipped as one to watch in 2017 by both Time Out Live and Live Nation.

Lisa performs with her Spanish guitar accompanied by Jack Tustin (double bass) and Arthur Newell (percussion).

ANDREW ASHONG - soul rebel

Weds 30 Nov 2016

It's no wonder his track ‘Flowers’ won Gilles Peterson’s ‘Track of the Year’ at the Worldwide Awards.

I saw Andrew Ashong live recently and just had to invite him to the Wet Fish... He's a soulful, charismatic performer and his jam is compulsive listening and viewing. You're in for a treat.

“Andrew Ashong stands out. We haven’t had one of these for a while: a hazy, jazzy dreamer of a young soul rebel who in his music references Roy Ayers and Shuggie Otis, Bill Withers and Marvin Gaye….It’s soul music for people who have been dismayed by most of the major developments in soul music of the last two, even three, decades.” The Guardian

Andrew Ashong, the man countless music bloggers have been urging audiences to go and see will be giving his first performance at the Wet Fish. He'll be joined by 3 band members for an hour's acoustic bliss.

Come and get lost in the sound...

The Canaries - jazz harmony trio

Weds 9 Sept 2015

We've longed to do a music dinner with a jazz harmony trio and so here they are - The Canaries. Styled on the iconic groups of the 1930s such as The Boswell Sisters, this promises to be a fun evening!

VIDEO - 'Do You Love Me'

Blended harmonies, unexpected rhythm changes, major keys changed to minor -- mid-song no less -- their music is irresistible and tickles us every time.

Another ground-breaker for the Wet Fish, come enjoy the ride!

Almunia - Summer Solstice Sundowner

Postponed - date TBD
Sun 21 June 2015
, 5pm onwards

New territory for us... this'll be an evening of soundscaping.

I love a Pink Floydy (Floydy?!) guitar sound, and I love smooth deep house grooves. Put the two together and you get Almunia - a duo from Italy whose album New Moon (check it on Spotify) makes me feel way cooler than I really am.

Lucky us they're making a rare visit to London and celebrating summer solstice with a live performance at the Wet Fish. Soak up the vibe with a Tom Collins or if you're really feeling it, a Negroni !

Sunday 21 June from 5pm - drop in for a cocktail or book yourself a table for dinner. Easy.

Smittys Big Four - jazz & swing!

Weds 28 Jan, 2015

a lively, friendly, swinging, civilized new band playing approachable music…a welcome addition to the London scene…definitely a band to watch out for” LondonJazz News

The little brother of the Kansas Smitty's House Band, the Big Four plays the music of Sidney Bechet and the upbeat swing of 1930s New Orleans.

The Big Four's unique combination of trumpet, soprano sax/clarinet, guitar and bass, separates the group from traditional Dixieland groups with the omission of drums and piano.

This streamlined formation allows the band to navigate New Orleans and swing standards with energy and tightness while maintaining melodic integrity. The band features Pete Horsfall, Giacomo Smith, Dave Archer, and Ferg Ireland.

Best book quick as this'll be popular. Feel free to wear a hat ;-)

We *heart* West Hampstead

Nowhere in London has a stronger community feel (official!). Nowhere is better connected - in fact to exactly 100 destinations direct from our three stations. And it's growing as fast as the Olympic area but has bundles more character to boot.

Why this little ode? (Apart from filling a little space!?) Because we're excited by how the area is developing its character, with more interesting shops and restaurants opening and a growing sense of community that's living up to its "villagey" accolade.

"Every great neighbourhood deserves a cafe it can rely on like a good friend". That's our raison d'etre. A true friend knows everything about you - and still likes you! Even though we don't always get it right... West Hampstead, thank you for your support, it encourages us. Big love x

Basin St Brawlers (Trio)

(What a night! Check out this video, excuse the sound)

Oh boy are we looking forward to this one. Step into a 1920s speakeasy with the best toe-tapping jazz from the era - Cole Porter, George Gershwin... delivered in the style of Louis Armstrong and Fats Waller...

The Basin Street Brawlers are London's own master exponents of hot jazz, swinging their way through the most beautiful melodies and raucous rags of the 1920s and 30s.

This will be another great night of food, music and well, who knows...

Live - Emilia Martensson
Weds 6 Nov 2013

After a summer break, live music at the Wet Fish is back with a very special act - Emilia Martensson accompanied by Barry Green on keyboard.

"The new face of British Jazz 2012..." The Observer

"...intimate, poised and even otherworldly..." Metro

"...Ethereal voice..." Time Out

"Barry Green... as well as being a strong soloist he is something of a singer's dream accompanist." Jazz Breakfast

Their debut album, And So it Goes, documents the duo’s shared love of a wide range of material, presenting fresh and exciting arrangements of a superb choice of songs. Drawing on the wistful folk songs of Emilia’s homeland alongside some of the greatest songs of the last century, the recording is a finely poised blend of jazz and artful alt-pop.

For sure, the jazz vocal legends inform Emilia's approach, yet it is the Swedish folk songs of her country that underpins who she is. Her pure, clear toned intimate voice, at times deeply soulful, at others ethereal, blur the lines between folk and jazz.

Ask us to play her CD when you're next in - you'll be seduced!

This event will be another roadblock - don't delay, book now.
